What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): I feel that being calm, having patience and understanding is vital. Respecting boundaries and being and advocate for the individual is also key. I feel that I do hold these qualities along with being outgoing, funny, companionate and inclusive. I see beyond the stigma and try to get the best out of people in order for them to be the best version of themselves. I am respectful and happy to be inconspicuous if the individual I’m supporting would feel more comfortable with that.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): I feel my qualities stated above enable me to be a great candidate for this job. I feel that my previous experience has equipped me for this position. Promoting independence is a big part of the job but maintaining safety would be my first priority. In my previous job I worked alongside the client and his family and Identified tasks that he struggled with the most and made an action plan to improve confidence in those areas.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): I have previous PA experience looking after a 17 year old boy who suffered a traumatic head injury, I was able to support him over a 2 year period until he no longer required a PA. Seeing the progression he made over this time is something I found empowering and had a great sense of achievement from. I believe that I am able to be a good friend whilst respecting boundaries. I have had 3 years away from PA work to raise my young daughter whilst my wife works as a nurse manager in our local hospital but as my daughter is now in full time education I wish to peruse a career in something I feel I am good at. I have done lots of humanitarian work such as working for my local food bank and leading the team over a 3 year period. I also worked in my local Emergency Department for the British Red Cross during Covid supporting vulnerable patients whilst in hospital and safely discharging them back to their home.
What are your hobbies/interests?: My hobbies include football, tennis, golf, snooker, bowling, cinema, any outdoor activities, you’ll often find me by the coast or in National parks.
