Personal Assistant Application Form Submission

Where did you hear about our PA vacancies? (required): Dewis CIL Website
If you are applying for a position as a Micro Enterprise Carer, please enter your business name::

I confirm that I have the right to work in the UK and am able to prove my eligibility status when required to do so. (required): Yes

Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. (required): I have been a full-time carer to my eldest son for the last 22 years. He has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and autism so I have extensive experience in all care aspects, inc. personal care, including hoisting, using a power wheelchair, getting out and about and attending (and battling for) appointments . I also have two other sons (younger than their sibling) so I have had many years of running a busy and chaotic household with small (now larger) children. I have held various job roles over the years, based in administration and management from working in a University Students’ Union to a construction company in London. I have trained as a broadcast assistant for BBC Radio Wales (it was a lot of fun) and currently oversee the administration of a property portfolio on a flexible hours basis.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): I feel having true empathy and not sympathy when working as a PA with a disabled person is key. Understanding the additional pressures and challenges someone with disability faces but without undermining their ability to cope with it. A PA should be a trusted support, genuine and reliable person. Someone who the client enjoys spending time with and can look forward to the company of. I know from working with many PA’s on behalf of my son over the years, it is the person that wants to enhance the quality of life for the family and is not there because it is just a job.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): By listening to what they need. I am training to be a counsellor so I pride myself on having good listening skills and would strive to provide support in the way that will help the client achieve their goals and independence. I understand disability deeply because my own life has revolved around it for 22 years. Through my son I have met many amazing people, both those with disabilities and the people who work with them and have a lot of experience in dealing with a world that doesn’t always prove easy for those with disabilities and their families.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): To put my years of experience to use in a positive and practical way. I see so many families struggling (we have been one ourselves) so I fully understand the need for support for the disabled person, and respite for the family members and the opportunity has finally come to my life at this point to be able to offer this. As mentioned, I am training to become a counsellor so I am looking for roles I can do around this as I do need a degree of flexibility (college day is a Thursday for example, term time).

What are your hobbies/interests? (required): I love my garden and we like to be sociable the minute the sun comes out! We have it set up for my eldest son so he is totally included, music, BBQs, hot tub. I also love music and going to festivals and gigs. I am a ferocious reader and do succumb to a Netflix series (or two or three...) I am all about making as many memories as possible so make a huge effort to see my family and friends who are back in Essex (my three great nieces and nephews are there age 6, 4 and 1 - its lively!) and Cornwall (where my god-daughter is who is 3).
