JOB DESCRIPTION

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am a 26 year old gentle lady in need of support in Barry I have severe learning difficulties, communication difficulties, epilepsy and autism. I need support with all activities, with communicating and with personal care at home and when out and about.  I enjoy many, varied activities and would like to expand my experiences and have opportunities to try new activities and visit new places. 

My interests include visiting St Fagan’s, Dyffryn Gardens, farms and other similar outdoor places.  I enjoy music, dancing, cycling (adapted bikes), trampolining/rebound, swimming, shopping, using public transport, eating out, cinema, theatre, museums and a bit of pampering. I enjoy short evening walks at the seaside and in parks, in all weathers. Being around other people, especially peers, is important to me.

I communicate in various ways but mainly using PECS, TEACCH, schedules and a high-tech communication aid. I need support to communicate.

I am able to walk but use a wheelchair and need support and encouragement to walk.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

I need support to help me to be as independent as possible in all aspects of my life. I need help and support to go out and at home to keep me safe, to encourage and help me to engage in activities, to communicate, to provide my personal care, to help me with eating and to help me gain new independence skills. I need someone to drive my car, push my wheelchair and support me to walk. I need someone to help plan, prepare and maintain my communication systems and resources.

HOURS OF WORK AVAILABLE

*Full time and part time hours available, Mondays – Saturdays, morning, afternoon and evenings

(*actual hours and days to be worked would be by mutual agreement, as available, following interview)

By mutual agreement, there could be opportunity for additional hours during school holidays and for relief cover. A degree of flexibility is preferable but not essential.

RATES OF PAY

Initially, £13.00 per hour with payment of receipted expenses when agreed in advance. 

TASKS CAN INCLUDE

  •          Driving my car and carefully planning routes
  •          Personal care – toileting, washing, dressing
  •          Help at mealtimes – some preparation of meals, help with eating and clearing away
  •          Giving oral medication (training will be given)
  •          Supporting me to and through activities
  •          Supporting me in the community
  •          Supporting me at home
  •          Keeping me safe at all times in all situations
  •          Pushing me in my wheelchair
  •          Encouraging/supporting me to walk
  •          Supporting and encouraging development of independence skills
  •          Supporting me to communicate
  •          Planning, preparing and some maintenance of communication systems
  •          Planning activities
  •          Supporting me through and post seizures
  •          Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of equipment and in day to day living.

TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED

  •          Someone who is punctual, dependable, reliable, trustworthy, flexible and caring

  •          Someone who is energetic and physically fit
  •          Someone who is keen to learn new skills to support me and who is receptive to information around this
  •          A driver with a clean driving licence
  •          Someone who would interact with me and enjoy participating in my activities with me
  •          Someone with a knowledge, understanding and experience of autism (preferred but not essential)
  •          Someone with a knowledge of and experience in the use of PECS and TEACCH (not essential as training will be provided) and with an understanding of communication difficulties
  •          Someone who is willing to attend training sessions beneficial to the post
  •          Someone with a knowledge of epilepsy (preferred but not essential as training will be provided)

ABOUT THE JOB

This is a job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted.     A 6 month trial period will be necessary in the first instance. The salary will be paid on a four weekly basis and appropriate holiday pay given.

The post is subject to satisfactory references and a DBS (Police) Check.
