A little about me

I am a funny, cheeky, warm 20-year-old man living with my family in Penarth. I am great company, quick with a joke, and genuinely interested in people and how they're feeling. I’m about to start college, which I’m really looking forward to.

I have a rare condition that meant, as a child, I had surgery to remove one half of my brain. It's a big thing to have been through, and I think its shaped me into a determined, good-humoured person. Day to day it means I have reduced vision on one side and some left-sided weakness, so I use a crutch and, for longer distances, a wheelchair. I also have occasional seizures. None of this defines me. I get on with life and just wants someone alongside me to help me do more of it.

Purpose of the job

To support me to get out and about, stay active, and build his independence in and around his community.

Keeping active really matters for me. When I am fit, everything is better, so a big part of this role is helping me stay moving, whether that's a swim, a session at the gym, or simply getting out and about locally.

What you'd be doing

Getting me out into the community and joining in with the things I enjoy. That could be swimming, going to the gym, a trip to the cinema, or a social outing. It could also be a night in on the video games, which I love. Mostly it's about good company and helping me stay active and independent. There may be some support with dressing and undressing, for example when going swimming, which is why the role is for a male PA.

 

 

Hours and pay

Four hours a week, in the Penarth area. I am  starting college three days a week, so there's real flexibility on when these hours fall. They could be a weekday or a weekend, and we're happy to work around the right person.

£17.30 per hour, plus 40p per mile.

The kind of person we're looking for

Someone friendly, chatty and confident, with a young outlook and a good sense of humour, who's happy to be proactive and get stuck in. You'll need to be a car driver with business class insurance, as getting me out and about is a big part of the role. Respect for confidentiality and for working around the family at home is important.

About the role

This position is subject to satisfactory references and a DBS Disclosure (Police Check), which must be completed prior to the commencement of employment. The cost of this check will be covered by the Local Authority.

All necessary checks will be conducted to verify that any candidate has the legal right to work in the UK before employment begins. Although this is a part-time role, it is a legitimate position requiring the submission of a National Insurance number. Employment will commence under an initial trial period. Wages will be paid on a four-weekly basis, and appropriate holiday pay will be provided.
